Hi Katie
Unfortunately pancreatitis doesn't totally discriminate on the basis of age! (althought it does have a greater incidence amongst over 50's). Probably the major contributing factor in youth pancreatitis is binge drinking or drug taking (although as we've said in the past, we'd not like to put all sufferers - and especially not your granddaughter in that basket). Pancreatitis can be the result of any number of factors including excessive drinking, gall stones, excessive fat in the diet, etc. The basic treatment is the same (see your doctor though!) is no alcohol, low fat diet, smaller and more regular meals (and we'd add healthier food storage and cooking).
All the best

I have been diagnosed with Chronic Pancreatitis since April 2011. I have been told that after attacks, or during them, you should not be eating until the pain subsides. However, you should be as hydrated as possible. If you are unable to keep liquids you MUST go to the hospital. Dehydration and Chronic Pancreatitis do not mix--very serious complications/problems can occur. Back to the questions, if you eat it should be clear liquids at first, followed by non-fat foods once you are able to keep the liquids down. Do not eat yogurt.

This is very sad that this lady has been treated with such disrespect and doubting her pain. I have been hospitalized 3 times since May 2011 for Pancreatitis and each time they ask me how much alcohol I consume and I don't drink. Thankfully they did treat my pain with Diladid as this was the only med that would even ease the pain. My heart goes out to this woman. Thanks for sharing.
Sincerely,
Suzann

I have had severe chronic pancreatitis for about 6 yrs now and the doctors have little advise other than morphine and percacet for pain and eating a lot of carbs. This book Beating Pancreatitis has given me more information than any of the doctors I have seen. I have been hospitalized several times in horrible pain (worse than natural childbirth) and have had two Dr's tell me what's going on with me is over their heads! My specialist just wants me to have an indefinite feeding tube and I just can't wrap my brain around that yet, my family doc said he feels that is a last ditch effort and I am not ready for that. I will say that I seam to get some relief when in an attack from a deep back rub, if the attack has not gotten too severe, when it is severe I pour sweat from every pore of my body, they say that is my bodies reaction to intense pain! This is the most depressing thing I have ever dealt with, I have a 13 yr. old and I have been ill most of her life which makes me feel awful that I can't be the on the go mom she would like me to be. Everyday is a battle and it scares me to no end! I have NEVER been a drinker and it is embarrassing that most people think you are if you have this disease, or you just want drugs! Thank you for the book and this forum, I am hoping to touch base with others so that maybe we can help each other!

My first attack came about 3 months ago, at the time I thought I was having a heart attack. Im only 32 btw, but was an alcoholic for over 15 years. Anyways, Ive had all the blood work done and evrything has been "normal" Ct scan, ultrasound, the works, and they keep telling me my pancreas is fine. I know it isnt. After months of my own research I have come to the conclusion that it is pancreatitis. I feel like I cant wait for Dr.s to diagnose it. Im afraid Im going to die.
Some days I cant breathe, or my hearts racing. Some nights Im so cold Im shaking, some niights Im sweating. My hands and feet are clammy and ice cold at times when everyone else in the house is warm amd cozy. My wife(LPN) checks my vitals from time to tiime and sometimes my BP is extermely low. I dont know what I can do to get them to keep looking at my pancreas. Oh, and the contrast they give me for the xrays and whay not, puts me in extreme pain. I never throw up or anything, but my upper abdomen hurts evry single day. It wraps around the right side to the middle of my back. PLEASE does anyone have any advice on how I can get them to stay focused on my pancreas
